A recent independent report performed by Intergy Corporation for Pasadena Water and Power summarizes the results of a recent field test performed at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, California. The purpose of the field test was to determine energy reduction in the hotel’s guest rooms using a GreenSwitch Energy Control System. The GreenSwitch system is designed to control energy consumption in hotel rooms based on the room’s occupancy status.

The system determines if a hotel room is vacant or occupied by inserting the room key in the GreenSwitch, and based on this occupancy condition, the system automatically shuts off controlled lights and sets the operating range of the in-room HVAC system to an occupied or unoccupied condition. Four rooms were chosen to be monitored. Two were retrofitted with GreenSwitch and two were used as control rooms. The results documented here are based on comparing rooms 161 (GreenSwitch Equipped Room) and 165 (Control Room). The HVAC usage was analyzed over a period of twenty-five days. The GreenSwitch equipped room used 36% less energy for HVAC than the control room. With the implementation of GreenSwitch technology is all 380 rooms, the hotel could save 681,849 kWh annually. The kWh reduction monitored during the test period correlates to similar studies which have shown savings between 25% and 45%.

GreenSwitch will be represented by Magnum Energy Solutions LLC and the GreenSwitch Group, and will attend the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show in New York, November 8-11 2008 in booth 3084

Grant money available to graduate students studying effects of non-traditional cognition in homicide investigations

OpenSourceScience.net, a non-profit research organization, has announced a new research grant for studying the use of psychic detectives in homicide investigations. According to research coordinator, Dr. Joni Johnston, the study is much needed:

“It happens all the time… law enforcement professional are faced with the prospect of using ‘psychic detectives’ in homicide investigations. This is often initiated by relatives of the victim who’ve seen such cases on television and want the same results in their case. Given the controversial nature of psychic abilities, it’s understandable that research has lagged behind what’s going on in the field, but it’s also clear that we have to take a closer look at what’s going on and determine when and if it’s effective. We hope this study will illustrate how rigorous and credible research can be conducted on a topic that, despite its controversial nature, is gaining acceptance among many homicide investigators, and holds great interest to the public they serve.”

The research grant of $2,000 is intended for students with a masters or doctoral degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a related social science field. Candidates with experience working with police organizations, or other applied settings preferred. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Dr. Johnston at: joni@opensourcescience.net.
